Bud Selig needs a hug!According the WSJ and the latest television ratings the World Baseball Classic was a success. So if you see MLB Commissioner give him a handshake, pat on the back or big hug – I think he needs it.

Griffey, Clemens Rock As USA Team Rolls In The WBC

A young Ken Griffey Jr. takes a swing in Seattle. hit two homeruns and drove in seven runs while struck out six in 4 and 2/3 innings today (March 10, 2006) as the USA team beat up on South Africa 17-0. You would have thought it was 1995 again the way these two players looked in the prime of their Major League glory days. I’d love to see Junior return to form this season after years of injuries in Cincy. I would love to see Rocket back for one more season too. He is definitely still capable for dominating a game from the mound.

USA Baseball Team Upset By Canada In WBC

WBC USA Team Stands Around As Rocket Clemens talksI just read on Baseball Musings about the fate of the USA baseball team today (March 8, 2006) versus Canada. I was surprised that team USA lost but I guess I should not be because in baseball David can defeat Goliath on any day. That is why they play the games.

Team USA had better buckle down since with another loss they could be left standing around.

Nomar Garciaparra recently decided to withdraw from the World Baseball Classic where he was going to play for Mexico. Garciaparra just signed a one year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers after playing a few injury prone years in Chicago and Boston. Nomar released a statement:

“While I am honored to have been asked to participate, at this point, I believe it is really important for me to concentrate on the year ahead … given all that I have been through with my health the past couple of years, and now with changing both teams and positions, I feel this is the time for me to focus on doing my best for the Dodgers, my new teammates and the wonderful fans in Los Angeles.”

I think it makes sense since the 32 years-old should be out to reclaim his stardom. Good luck to you Nomar, I hope you have a great healthy season.

Barry Bonds Makes Smart Move: To Sit Out Baseball Classic

announced today that he is going to sit out of the World Baseball Classic. This is unfortunate for the US team however, I think it is a smart move by Barry. He is over 40 years old and his knees limited him to only fourteen games last season. According to the latest post by Barry Bond’s on his website:

“As it is every season, my main goal and main focus is for our team to win a championship. I need to be in the best physical shape for the 2006 season — in what could possibly be my last season. I owe it to the Giants organization, my teammates, and most of all to the fans of San Francisco to give 100 percent this season. I assure you, my decision was not an easy one, but based on my circumstances, I had to put my health and my team first. I wish Team USA the best of luck and even though I won’t be in the dugout with them, I’ll be definitely be cheering them on to bring our country a WBC title.”

So hopefully by sitting out these early March games Bonds will endure the hardships of a long baseball season with the all-time homerun record within his reach.

World Baseball Classic Rosters Are Ridiculous

Mike PiazzaI am looking forward to a spring classic in the form of the since I love the game but I am going to keep this short and sweet in saying the rosters are ridiculous. The rules which determine which country an athlete should represent need to be revisited. I understand the need to level the playing field and try and promote the game and I am all for it. However, there is no way should be playing for Italy!
